Sabbath in Puritan New England Alice Morse Earle 9781496138798 Books

I found this book to be very informative and interesting. It covers a lot of information that we don't know about today. The ways they paid their minister (which I don't think minister nowadays would appreciate), how they ordained their ministers, the lack of singing and how when singing was introduced the unique ways it was opposed. They include what happened when a heating stove was first introduced into those cold meeting houses, how they kept warm without heat, how silence wan enforced, the psalm-books they used, the length of the services, the pews for the average person and the special pews for others, the authority of the church, how they took care of their horses during the services, how they called everyone to the service, roles of the Deacons and much, much more. This is a wonderfully informative book and best of all it was free on Kindle.

Sabbath in Puritan New England Alice Morse Earle 9781496138798 Books Reviews

We here in America have lost some of the blessings of observing the whole Lord's Day. God has given us a day just to focus on Him and it is surely a taste of Heaven here on Earth. It is a delight or should be. But to so many I see it as a day for recreation, for eating out, for working, etc. They are missing so many blessings. Yes, we devote every day to the Lord but the other 6 days we have other priorities but on the Lord's Day the Lord should be our only priority and the worship of Him, telling others about Him or learning more about Him. I have heard it said from some that they worship him all day, every day but I find it hard to believe that they give Him undivided attention during those times This book tells us how important the Lord's Day was to those in puritan New England. Even if you think they were extreme in their practices you have to admit that their focus was in the right place. Maybe we should try to make the Lord as important on the one day in seven He has given us as the Puritans did.
Absolutely adorable history of the Puritans life in early Christian New England.
You will never look at the Puritans quite the same again. This is a charming and sometimes comical book. A great way to learn history, smiling along the way. The spelling takes a bit more time to decipher, but it's kind of fun to experience those "Ah ha" moments. Enjoy!
If you have an interest in early Americana, you cannot miss reading this work (and I suspect everything written by AME). Ms Earle was a popularizer, but she shows a vast and deep knowledge of early America history. She is not without the biases of her era and class, but she also does not sugar-coat American history. One major problem for the historian is that this work lack citations.
A very entertaining glance at the modes of worship among the early American Puritans. Many amusing stories and witty commentaries throughout keep the modern reader interested. Well worth a read for those interested in our earliest forefathers.
This late 19th century(?) look into the history of 17/18the century New England society (it talks about some non-Sabbath and non-Puritan topics too) makes for very interesting reading. The good, bad, and different are mentioned, and what's also fascinating is to look at how the history itself has been written (over a hundred years ago), and make a comparison with things today. You need to be mindful that the nuances (and spelling!) of some of the words has changed over time, but for all that, I found it interesting and rewarding. As I finished one chapter, I genuinely was looking forward to the next chapter, as they each covered different aspects of the topic.
This is a review of the paperback copy, not of the book's content. I will never again buy ANY book published by Dossier. The print is blindingly small. It's like the bottom line in an eyechart. To any reader who may consider ordering ANY text that Dossier puts out, I would advise you to think again.
