In this writers' opinion this publication is very deficient in substance and accurate historical information ! The terminology used to describe techniques is completely wrong . Backfist strikes are repeatedly referred to as furi uchi (weilding strike ) , instead of uraken uchi .And uke waza receiving/blocking techniques are also incorrectly named by this author . Kyokushinkai symbols appear on the Keiogi of Japanese Yudanshu in photos illustrating the various Kihon waza ( basic techniques ) . Many photos appear to be from Mas Oyama's copyright publications . There also seems to be an obsession with this author to refer to various members of his orgainization ( UMAS ) by always referrring to their apparently " high " Yudanshu ranks . This would be considered rude and inappropriate in either Okinawa or Japan . The Japan Karate Federation is referred to as Japan Karate Association , in this publication . Miyagi Sensei NEVER awarded Judan to anyone (Gogen Yamaguchi ) . This so-called UMAS Karate association , has no direct recognition by any Kaiha located in Japan or Okinawa . Please see Morio Higgaonna and the IOGKF , or the book published by the Japan Karate Federation , if you want to purchase a book that accurately , historically and correctly depicts Goju Ryu ! This publication is the result of a break away group of American \Karate students ( UMAS ) , who have absolutely NO current affiliation with any existing Japanese or Okinawan Kaiha .Product details

Karatedo The Way of the Empty Hand Mr Richard A Heyman Sr 9781490535135 Books Reviews
This is an excellent book for young novice martial artist who wish to learn basics derived from the traditional Okinawan style of Goju-Ryu Karate-do. Sensei Heyman is a Seventh Degree Black Belt in Goju-Ryu, as well as the recipient of Kyoshi Teaching Credentials, which rank him a teacher of teachers. Sensei Heyman is also a Third Degree Black Belt in Jyu Jitsu, and former assistant director of United Martial Arts Systems.
Many false statements in this book. If you want good books read Yamaguchi or Yamakura. They are way better than this.
Richard did a nice job putting this together. Although it was never meant to be a definitive work on goju or karate, it did hit it's mark with the pics and stories from days gone by. The only problem I had with it is that fact that neither randy or larry has a school and has been keeping up on their karate studies in a structured format but who cares.. they both trained hard enough they will never forget what they have learned and are a couple of great guys and good goju men. So I give it 5 stars because it is nostalgic and well meant on the part of the author. So forget trying to fact check every historical item or other point of contention. Just enjoy it as one persons view into a past that most people, other then those who trained there, will never know.
How refreshing after all the Martial Art books out there of the writer "having a vision" or somehow having insight that the reader could never capture or understand! Ric Heyman Sr. illistrate slices of the life of a warrior and his band of brothers and just how BUDO can bring purpose and open so many opportunities. These very ordinary events allow the reader to relate, feel comfortable and know that this certainly could be them and that it is not Martial Arts that are special but rather your approach to it.
Classic example of allowing Martial Arts to be the instument of "Self Discovery" for any practitioner from any walk of life.
